Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora - the tissue that covers the vaginal opening. The purpose of a labiaplasty is to better define the inner labia. In some instances, women with large labia can experience pain during intercourse, or feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Others may feel unattractive, or wish to enhance their sexual experiences by removing some of the excess tissue. The problems that cause enlarged or unattractive labia can be caused by genetics, sexual intercourse or difficulties in childbirth.
General Procedure
The procedure is performed under general anesthetic and is done in one of two ways. Your surgeon will trim the inner folds so that they no longer protrude - either by reducing the edges of the labia, or by snipping out a 'V' shape wedge of tissue. Then the remaining edges are carefully sewn back together taking care to obtain as natural a result as possible, by maintaining the natural anatomy.
Recovery
After surgery, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which usually disappears completely after 1-2 weeks. The labial incisions usually heal over several weeks and scars are rarely noticeable. After the procedure you will wear a panty liner and use antibiotic ointment. The sutures dissolve so there is no need for physical removal. You are advised to avoid vigorous exercise for 3 weeks and vaginal intercourse for 6 weeks. A daily bath or gentle shower ensures quick healing which is usually complete within two weeks. Follow up visits will be scheduled to check on your progress.
