Lower Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy)

Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Deborah Ekstrom performs lower body lift surgery at Salisbury Plastic Surgery in Worcester, MA, to achieve a more desirable contour. With lower body lift surgery, excess skin will be removed and tightening techniques will be used to eliminate sagging or a stretched appearance. This procedure will focus on areas such as the abdomen, lower back, buttocks, hips, and thighs. Typically, men and women receive this procedure after losing a significant amount of weight (100 pounds or more). The overall goal is to elevate and tighten the lower body to create a slimmer and younger look. Our Worcester practices perform "lifts" to all the target areas at one time or schedule them in stages.

Ideal Candidates

Men and women with a significant amount of loose skin on their abdomen, buttocks, thighs and hips are ideal candidates for this surgery. It is important that the weight loss has been stabilized and that a proper physical is completed to ensure the patient is healthy enough to undergo this procedure. Others who would benefit from the lower body lift are:
  • Women who have given birth and have lost the firmness in their skin
  • Men and women of advanced age who would like to reverse the damage of aging and hanging skin
  • Men and women of overall good health and can have surgery under anesthesia

What to Expect

Skin removal procedures are very involved and will require several incisions on the torso, buttocks, and thighs. The skin will be removed and then sutured into a higher position. Some patients may require liposuction in some areas if there are additional pockets of isolated fat to address. In addition, it is common to complete the look with a fat transfer, which involves taking fat from another part of the body to help add volume to the buttocks for a curvier, more normal appearance. A lower body lift can be done in one setting. However, it may be in the patient’s best interest to separate the various components of the procedure as this is a 5 or 6 hour surgical journey and involves slow healing during recovery that can take up to a year.

Anticipated Results

While for the majority of our weight loss patients a lower body lift can result in outstanding outcomes, it is important to understand that scarring is a part of this surgery. Unfortunately, when skin removal of this nature occurs, scarring is unavoidable. However, you can trust that Dr. Ekstrom will make sure the scars can be concealed with clothing as possible and are made as thin as possible so they heal nicely and properly. Most of our patients feel the results from this surgery outweigh the scars. Patients are lighter, can wear tighter-fitting clothes, and they do not have to worry about hiding their loose skin. This surgery creates a tighter appearance, a more toned look, and a more youthful contour. It takes the average patient about a year for the scars to fade and to fully recover from this surgery.

Patients considering investing in these procedures need to be at goal weight and their health stable. Also, women of childbearing age need to consider that another pregnancy will damage the skin again with the fluctuation of weight.
